Fire Risk Assessments

What is a Fire Risk Assessment?

A careful look at your premises and the people who use them, from a fire prevention perspective. It’s about understanding the potential risks, then improving your fire safety precautions to keep people safe.

Business premises need a Fire Risk Assessment

By law, all business premises are required to conduct a fire risk assessment. However, not everyone has a good understanding of this essential fire safety measure.

How often do I need an assessment?

It is recommended that the following be included in the review:
Review – every 12 months after the original assessment is done
New assessment – Every 5 years a new assessment should be conducted
If the building’s purpose has substantially changed
If the building structure or layout has changed.

The survey includes examinations of the following:

  • The building’s construction, layout, and use
  • The number of occupants, including any potentially vulnerable occupants
  • Electrical equipment on the site that could be a potential source of ignition
  • Whether the building has a history of any fire loss
  • Arson protection measures
  • Smoking areas as well as prevention measures that have been taken to prevent fires caused by smoking
  • Protection against fires that are caused by lighting
  • Installed and portable heating devices and types
  • Any fire hazards from outside contractors or building works
  • General housekeeping and escape routes being kept clear of any combustible materials
  • The configuration and maintenance of escape routes
  • Storage arrangements for any wastes, flammable and dangerous liquids
  • Training of staff, fire wardens, staff trained in use of fire extinguishers
  • Evacuation procedures
  • Escape route signage

The fire risk assessment also includes a detailed risk assessment, conclusions & recommendations & an action plan.

The survey establishes the business’s compliance with  the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the latest Fire Safety Act 2021
